Bi: Air, wind, breath. Zapotec of the Isthmus.

Yuu: Tierra. Chatino from Panixtlahuaca.

Bi Yuu is our most ambitious project. Founded in 2012 by Centeno, it became part of our internal projects as the studio grew.

Bi Yuu began with the mission to embrace Mexico's multiculturalism and to answer a fundamental question: What is the role of design in our country's culture?

This inquiry led to other questions: How can we connect industry, design, and textile innovation? Can design be a tool for positive social impact? How do we create pieces that, beyond aesthetics, carry meaning and impact?

Marisol's journey led her to engage with communities possessing deep-rooted textile traditions, forming a multidisciplinary team to bring a broad and comprehensive vision to the project. The first Bi Yuu community was established in Teotitlán del Valle, Oaxaca. This interdisciplinary and horizontal team has facilitated a dialogue between designers, artisans, consultants, and producers, enriching each piece and pushing the boundaries of design.

"Rugs with soul, woven by expert hands."

Bi Yuu rugs are the result of collective learning. Innovation in processes, the quality of materials, respect for manual work, a design-focused approach, and the use of color are some of the elements that distinguish Bi Yuu fabrics. These are more than just rugs; each piece tells a story.

Today, the Bi Yuu family is not only a space for textile experimentation but also a space for social experimentation. Topics such as fair trade, trust, the role of crafts in design, creative processes, economic issues, diversity, and multiculturalism are regularly discussed and addressed. Each community member's time, customs, and concerns resonate throughout these discussions.

With a decade of experience, Bi Yuu continues to evolve, questioning the role of design and objects in daily life rituals and how the story behind each piece impacts the final result.

Social design has no zip code.

The Community

At Bi Yuu, we care about creating workspaces that take advantage of each member's strengths, promote personal and collective development, and respect each member's uses and customs. In Teotitlán del Valle, for example, many of our weavers work under a family scheme, in which there is a head who functions as team leader. We respect this model and adapt to it as it is part of the local culture.

In Bhadohi, India, we work with a group of weavers who, in addition to bringing us closer to new techniques, such as the Persian knot or the Tibetan knot, have also allowed us to get closer to their culture and their values, opening thought on the rug as an object, its origin and its different adaptations throughout the world.

"We honor processes and the value of time."

Following the logic of our creative principles and respecting the craftsmanship behind all our processes, we do not have an inventory of pieces. Each of the rugs and tapestries we design and weave has an intention and a purpose, which is why, in most cases, we do not accumulate stock.

We appreciate your patience; please pre-order your rug.

Certification

All rugs produced in Badohi, India, are certified by Good Weave, a non-profit association whose main objective is to end child labor exploitation and create social programs for artisans.
