Rug collection and restoration program.
Year: 2017-2024
Created expressly for the Hotel Esencia, in Xpu Ha, Riviera Maya, this collection is a tropical celebration of the mid-century style, with abstract shapes but vivid and striking colors. Thanks to this collaboration, we have also created a rug restoration program to give a second life through dyeing to the pieces that we have made year after year for the hotel since 2015.
Pitaya rugs are constantly subjected to wear and tear in a tropical environment, making these luxury pieces age prematurely and require replacement. Turning to dye as a way of salvaging them, our team in Mexico City and collaborator in Teotitlán del Valle Oaxaca began a project to receive faded rugs, give them a second dyeing with indigo to restore the finishes of the piece, and return them to the hotel to give them a second life.
Indigo is the ideal pigment for this project, given its superior capacity in xing color, depth, and possible cold dyeing. This project not only decreases waste but also permits a methodological reaction in the field of design. What is the value of used objects in luxury design?
Special thanks to Hotel Esencia's creative director, Juan Carlos Gutierrez, for his trust, creativity, and sensitivity throughout this long journey.
