Claroscuro collection Client: OMET Year: 2024

The "Claroscuro" collection is an homage to the duality and deconstruction of motherhood through five distinct objects. Inspired by Coatlicue, the iconic Mixtec goddess of Earth, death, and fertility, this collection creates a space of sisterhood that embraces both nature and feminine obscurity. As an abstraction of the tozozontli, the ritual vigil where Coatlicue was adorned with flowers, "Claroscuro" instills a sense of communion with the Goddess, integrating key objects to evoke that ritualistic ambiance.

For this second edition, we explore embracing the lighting side of femininity and motherhood.

The narrative contemplates social dictates that mold motherhood based on predefined stereotypes and roles for women. These imperatives influence nurturing, femininity, and cultural expectations. Despite ongoing contemporary debates, patriarchal representations persist around motherhood, and the myth of the immaculate mother endures. This leads to stigma and judgment against those who don't conform to this idealization.

In Mesoamerican cultures, childbirth was symbolized as a battleground, and mothers who triumphed were regarded as warriors. Coatlicue, the goddess with a skirt of serpents, divine mother of the Sun, Moon, and stars, is entwined with the principles of origin and holds a central position in Mexica power, serving as the world’s axis. Established conventions of beauty and submission imposed upon women through her essence are challenged.

" Claroscuro" exalts the figure of Coatlicue as a beacon of empowerment and resilience, celebrating her vigorous representation of femininity. It acknowledges the darkness and primal strength intrinsic to motherhood, paying tribute to its resistance and capacity to transcend preconceived archetypes.
